Hello, so i have come across a lot of people with this situation, I have managed to make mine work. There is a trick to making it work, however this isnt a fix, its more of a trick. so try these steps and get back to me please if it works or does not.
So i have a 11x6x11 (including the brick base) but any size should work.
Of course make sure that its in the ground, it makes things easier.
Put your layer of bricks on the bottom layer and then add your layers of wood logs, i use twilight Oak, but any logs should work.
Cover the top in dirt and have your machine block (Pile igniter) in the centre, spam that with a rubber mallet so you notice in chat it enables, disables a few times and then break one dirt/grass block to uncover it, there should be charcoal blocks underneath.
